The Michelin Guide's review
Surrounded by a deep moat, the imposing Castel Nuovo was built in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou's architects, Pierre de Chaulnes and Pierre d'Agincourt, using Angers castle as their model. On the city side, a fine triumphal arch (1467) marks the entrance. At the end of the inner courtyard, a staircase leads to the Barons' hall (15C), with a fine ribbed-vault ceiling. A panoramic terrace offers fine views over the city.
