Seibu Rindoh forest road (42km from Nagata to Yudomari) is a stunning but narrow coastal road that skirts around sheer cliffs down which icy streams tumble, crossing one of the wildest parts of the island of Yakushima. It is not uncommon to encounter herds of small deer with downy rumps or tribes of monkeys intently delousing each other or gleaning berries that have fallen onto the road. (Don't feed them or get too close as they bite and scratch.)
