Villa Lenbach houses collections of Munich paintings from the 19C, including portraits of Franz von Lenbach himself. The gallery's main claim to fame, however, is its Der Blaue Reiter collection, which comprises works by the movement's founder members, Kandinsky, Marc and Kubin. Skilfully curated, canvas by canvas the exhibition traces the disappearance of the subject and the journey towards abstract art. The gallery also contains a number of contemporary works.
