The Michelin Guide's review
In 1645 Maisonneuve erected his dwelling on this square, originally known as the Place d'Armes. By 1706, it had become the public market place, the popular setting for official announcements by the town crier, criminal punishments including whippings and hangings, and occasional duels. The square was offi-cially named Place Royale in 1892.
