The museum was established in 1825, thanks to the generosity of local painter François-Xavier Fabre (1766-1837), who established several collections here. His holdings subsequently grew significantly, in particular thanks to donations from local artists such as Bazille and Soulages, and have over 900 works (out of more than 7 000), presented chronologically, from the Renaissance to the present day.
