The Michelin Guide's review
An excellent example of a self-sufficient Cistercian monastery, the well-restored abbey of Fontenay set in a secluded green valley was consecrated in 1147. The land is called Fontanetum, as it "floats on fountains". The abbey church, one of France's oldest Cistercian foundations, is open to the public. To the south, the cloister is an architectural masterpiece. Note also the dormitory, chapter house, scriptorium and blacksmiths.
