The Michelin Guide's review
Begun in 1099, this cathedral is a masterpiece of Romanesque art and the work of Lombard architect Lanfranco, the Maestri Campionesi and sculptor Wiligelmo. As well as remarkable external sculpted decoration and an attractive bell tower nicknamed the "Ghirlandina", the cathedral has a brick interior bringing together Gothic exuberance with Romanesque luminosity. Note the extraordinary rood screen of Lombard lions and small atlantes. The cathedral is part of a Unesco World Heritage site.
