The Michelin Guide's review
At a time when the sea came right up to its ramparts, Milet was one of the most powerful cities in Asia Minor. A centre of intellectualism and innovation, it was built according to an octagonal plan that later inspired the Romans. Nestled on a spur rising above the Menderes plain, it is well worth a detour to visit its fan-shaped theatre (4C BCE), that could accommodate 25,000 people. A visit here also includes thermal baths and temples, such as the Delphinion, a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo Delphinius in a bucolic setting.
