The Michelin Guide's review
The Moors built this 9C fortress to defend the 792m Roman bridge that spans the River Guadiana, scattered with islets. Inside the walls, note a cistern dug out at the level of the river's water. The Moors adorned it salvaged elements (Corinthian capitals and Visigoth marble friezes) in a fine example of recycling.
