Slavehaven Underground Railroad Museum
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This bungalow is located on the edge of The Pinch district of Memphis, so named for the poverty of its earliest inhabitants. Built around 1850, it used to serve as a refuge for the Underground Railroad, a secret network of mainly railways that enabled runaway slaves to escape to Canada. Built by German immigrant Jacob Burkle, the house has a trapdoor and a cellar where the fugitive slaves could hide.
