Abbey of Melk

The Michelin Guide's review
The Abbey of Melk, proudly perched on a hillock overlooking the Danube, was built in the early 18C and is one of Austria's Baroque gems. Its contrasting colours, graceful details and unexpected prospects, resulting from the restrictions arising from the site's trapezoid shape, make Melk, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a masterpiece. Surrounded by the abbey buildings, the church dominates the complex with its symmetrical towers on its west façade and its 65m-high octagonal dome.
