The Michelin Guide's review
Moulay Ismail (1647-1727) was a sultan who endowed Meknes with the legacy of his outstanding architectural achievements. Take in Bab Berdaine and Bab El-Khemis, two superb gates built into the dozens of kilometres of walls erected at the time. Then, beyond the so-called "wall of the rich", which protected the well-to-do from invaders, the imperial city opens up: the Agdal Basin, Dar El-Ma and granaries for storing water and goods; the sultan's tomb and the Christians' prison.
