The Michelin Guide's review
Moulay Ismaïl crowned his works as a builder with this majestically proportioned construction begun shortly before his death and completed in around 1732 by his son, Moulay Abdallah. The gate, the largest in Meknes and one of the most famous in North Africa, was like a triumphal arch at the entrance to the imperial city. Bab Mansour, also known as "renegade's gate", is said to have been built by a Christian architect who converted to Islam. An exhibition gallery where various artistic creations are displayed has been set up inside.
