The Michelin Guide's review
The fortress built by the archbishops of Salzburg from the mid-13C watches over an ancient Alpine route. The village of Mauterndorf, with its massive gabled houses, testifies to this distant past. The castle, extensively remodelled in the 16C, still has its medieval frescoes in the chapel. After visiting the castle, you can go on to see the collections of the Lungau Regional History Museum (Landschaftsmuseum).
