Basilique Notre-Dame-des-Miracles
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This 12C basilica is the major monument of Romanesque art in the Upper Auvergne. The doorway on the west façade depicts the Ascension (on the tympanum) and the signs of the Zodiac (on the archivolt). The church houses the statue of Notre Dame des Miracles, famous for miraculously freeing two local men who had been taken prisoner by the Arabs in Spain, hence the legend of the "Saracen irons". On the right, in the transept, admire a rare 16C Madonna and Child. In the right side aisle, note the superb and colourful Romanesque baptismal font, decorated with 14 arcatures.
