The archaeological, historical and natural site of the rupestrian churches of Matera encompasses some surprising constructions, perfectly integrated into the surrounding nature. Over 150 churches are thus hewn out of the rock in the town of Matera and Montescaglioso. This protected territory occupies around 6 000ha and includes the plateau formed by the rock of the Murge, at an elevation of between 300m and 500m.
