The Michelin Guide's review
Hwaeom-sa Temple was built in the middle of the first millennium on the current site of Jirisan National Park, although most of the various buildings that make up the shrine date from the 16C-17C. On the forecourt of Gakhwangjeon Hall, the largest wooden Buddhist structure in Korea, look out for the five-storey pagoda to the west, each floor of which is decorated with the twelve gods of the zodiac. A path behind the temple leads to different retreats.
