The Michelin Guide's review
"Red roofs against the blue sea" is how Cézanne described the village of L'Estaque. A number of painters followed the master here, including Renoir, Braque, Dufy, Marquet and Othon Friesz. Today, a few fish restaurants and stalls selling chichis frègis (sugar doughnuts) help to keep the village's traditional ambience alive. For a good view of the harbour, head up to church square in the old village. Be warned that L'Estaque is popular with the inhabitants of Marseille and so gets very busy at weekends!
