The Michelin Guide's review
In 1844, when the Old Port was no longer sufficient, the Bassin de la Joliette was built. Since then, the Bassin du Lazaret and Bassin d'Arenc and northward extension have followed. The reconversion, geared towards oil and chemistry, led to the transfer of the major industrial activities to the Étang de Berre (Berre Lagoon) and Gulf of Fos. It can all be seen from the coastal motorway on the way into Marseille.
