The Michelin Guide's review
Located in the heart of the Cilento nature reserve, Velia was founded in 535 BC by Phocean Greek refugees. An active port, known as Elea by the Greeks, it became a Roman territory but never relinquished its cultural and linguistic Greek roots. The city was famous for its school of philosophy, which flourished during the 6C-5C BC and counted Parmenides and Zeno among its followers.
