Manaus Mercado Municipal

The Michelin Guide's review
The Mercado Municipal was built in 1880 and based on Les Halles in Paris, which at the time was considered to be the height of modernity. Inside lies a labyrinth of stalls selling Amazon-grown fruit and vegetable, but also medicinal plants and crafts from the region. The smells mingle in a heady mix, in particular in the butchers' area, frozen in a bygone era, or in the fishmongers', whose wares include tucunaré, with its distinctive yellow markings on the tail, and the pirarucu with such hard scales that the Indians use them as nail files.
