The Michelin Guide's review
This crest at 2 573m altitude and the 100 km2 of surrounding uplands constitute the largest petrified forest in the world. Remnants of more than 100 different species of plant, including redwoods similar to those of California, are found here. Ash and mudflows buried the trees 50 million years ago; erosion uncovered them. The Specimen Ridge Trail (28km) ascends the ridge.
