Haleakala National Park

The Michelin Guide's review
The spectacular desolation of its enormous crater valley-7.5 miles long, 2.5 miles wide and 3,000-feet deep-has been compared to the mountains of the moon. Pastel hues of red, yellow and orange, as well as gray, purple, brown, black and pink, accent cliffsides and cinder cones. It's worth waking up in the dark of early morning to drive from your beachfront resort and watch the sunrise over the Haleakala's 10,023-foot summit.
