The Michelin Guide's review
Built by Louis Le Vau and decorated by Charles Le Brun, the splendid Château de Vaux le Vicomte prefigures the splendour of Versailles and remains one of the masterpieces of the 17C. On 17 August 1661, Nicolas Fouquet offered a sumptuous feast to Louis XIV here. The latter, however, became jealous of such ostentation and had Fouquet arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. The castle was spared at the Revolution and protected by its succession of owners. A stroll through the grounds designed by Le Nôtre is an unforgettable experience.
