The Michelin Guide's review
Built in 800 by King Indra, Candi Mendut can be recognised by its cubic shape. The stairs and external walls are decorated with low reliefs and bodhisattva. But the main interest of the temple resides in the three statues (3m), probably the finest to be seen in Java in situ. Sitting European style, the Buddha is flanked to the right by the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and to the left by the repented demon, Vajrapani. Their feet are smooth from being touched by worshippers.
