The Michelin Guide's review
Built by Juan Gómez de Mora under Philip III (1619), Plaza Mayor was the symbol of Habsburg Madrid. Its present appearance is due to Juan de Villanueva and dates back to the late 18C: a square surrounded by arcades, where a stamp and coin market is held on Sunday mornings, and with a statue of Philip III on horseback at the centre. The shops around the square (including a delicatessen and a milliner's) have retained the look of times past.
