The Michelin Guide's review
The "Madara Horseman", accompanied by a lion and a dog, is carved in low relief into the cliffside, 23m above the road. This sculpture, which is on Unesco's World Heritage list, is believed to have been carved by Bulgarians in the 8C to celebrate the victories of Tervel Khan (700-721). Two hours should be sufficient to tour the whole site, occupied since prehistoric times. The different sights include the Nymphs' cave, the rock chapel, as well as the remains of a Roman villa and of a Bulgarian fortress.
