The Michelin Guide's review
The "parish village" of Gammelstad is the best preserved in the whole country. This type of settlement was only occupied during important religious festivals as parishioners were unable to return to their homes in the evening due to the harshness of the climate. To the south-west of the large medieval church, built in the 15C in late-Scandinavian Gothic style, Gammelstad's attractive and perfectly preserved houses have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. An open-air museum is also located nearby.
