A visit to Pak Ou is one of the most popular tourist excursions around Luang Prabang. The main cave is home to some 2 000 statues of Buddha of varying size, albeit poorly displayed. Above all, the visit is a pretext for a boat trip along the Mekong to its confluence with the Nam Ou river. A second cave above it is accessible via a flight of around 200 steps. The effort is rewarded with a view over the karst landscape on the opposite bank.
