This old residential district of the city has preserved many 18C and 19C squares fronted by fine Georgian and Victorian façades. Once very popular with artists and writers, the area was the cradle of the Bloomsbury Group in the early 20C, whose members included Virginia Woolf. Today, the area's artistic and intellectual traditions are kept alive by the internationally renowned British Museum.
