The Michelin Guide's review
Following the path of an old Roman road between London and Oxford, Oxford Street takes you up to Marble Arch and then on to the boundaries of Hyde Park. To the east it runs into New Oxford Street. The south side was almost entirely built around 1850. It is a trading street without equal. Its rise began with the famous Selfridges store (1908). Other great department stores followed: John Lewis, D.H.Evans, Debenhams and Marks and Spencer.
