The Michelin Guide's review
Cardinal Newman (1801-1890), who converted to Catholicism in 1845, was the one who introduced into England the congregation of the Oratory, founded in Rome by Saint Philip Neri in 1575. The London oratory, better known by the name of the Brompton Oratory, designed by Herbert Gribble in the Italian Baroque style (1881-1884), has a large facade (1890) with a peristyle. A dome erected in 1896 tops the transept. The imposing interior has rich decorations of multicoloured marble.
