The Michelin Guide's review
As this abbey is a Cistercian monastery, only the public church and part of the community church are open to the public. It was founded in 1832 to receive the exiled Melleray Community from Loire-Atlantique. Being mainly composed of Irish monks, this community came under threat of dissolution - unless the foreign monks left France. The monks are devoted to prayer, but also pursue a number of crafts.
