The Michelin Guide's review
Praça Dom Pedro IV was once the setting for autos-da-fé that took place during the Inquisition. Its present appearance is the work of Pombal. It is lined by 18C and 19C buildings now occupied by cafés and small shops that have kept their original decoration, such as the Nicola café with its Art Deco façade and the tobacco kiosk covered with azulejos by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. The statue of Dom Pedro IV and two Baroque fountains adorn the centre of the square.
