Château de Lichtenberg
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Built on a rocky spur (414m), the castle dating back to the 13C was transformed at the end of the 16C into a defensive fortress decorated in Renaissance style. Seized by Louis XIV's troops in 1678, it was incorporated into the defensive system protecting the new borders of France. Slightly remodelled by Vauban, it resisted until 9 August 1870, when it was heavily bombed. The restoration work has gone beyond a mere historical reconstruction and events bring it back to life all year long.
