The Michelin Guide's review
The area has been inhabited since the protohistoric period. The town centre in which the philosopher Gorgias was born was established in 729 BC by the Chalcidians of Naxos. There you will see some wall ruins and pyramid-shaped monumental tombs. The Syracuse gateway, the city's former entrance provides a window onto what appears to be an acropolis on San Mauro hill containing what was left of a temple. From the top you have a wonderful panoramic view over Lentini and Lake Biviere.
