The Michelin Guide's review
Alchi is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. Nestled in a valley rather than perched on a hilltop, and built entirely from willow, the tree which grows all around. It was erected by the Tibetan Kal-dan Shes-rab in the 11C. Frescoes depicting the 1 000 Buddhas demonstrate the skill of Kashmiri artists.
