Ladakh is home to numerous gompa (monasteries), perched in the upper Himalayas along the Indus river, both upstream and downstream of Leh, the capital. These richly decorated temples dedicated to Buddha and the Bodhisattva are full of offerings given by worshippers. Hemis is the largest monastery, while Alchi is considered to be the most beautiful.
