The Michelin Guide's review
This square is dominated by the town hall, a sober Classical-style construction (1715) crowned by a 17C clock tower. The Council Chamber (1760) boasts a Rococo façade. Standing opposite, the Stadhouterlijk Hof (1881) is the former residence of the Friesian stathouders (governors). The statue of William Louis, the first stathouder, stands at the centre of the square.
