The Michelin Guide's review
Culminating in an altitude of 1 395m, the imposing outline of Mount Pelée (120km2 with a diameter of 13km) dominates the whole of Martinique. On its eastern side, the village of Morne-Rouge makes a good base for climbing this fascinating volcano - its major eruption on 8 May 1902 is still etched in local memory. The chance to walk along its flanks should not be missed, enabling you to venture close to the caldera and cones. Canyoning excursions in the vicinity go past stunningly beautiful landscapes.
