The Michelin Guide's review
Occupying the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, this region was a refuge for the last of the Nasrids (a Moorish dynasty) after the fall of Granada. It was then the site of a Morisco rebellion that was mercilessly crushed in 1568. After sinking into oblivion, the Alpujarras were rediscovered by the Romantic travellers of the 19C. Since then, visitors have never tired of exploring its whitewashed villages that cling to the mountainside.
