Within the Landmannalaugar massif, this lovely hiking trail (2-3hr there and back; requires a good level of fitness) leads to the colourful Brennisteinsalda volcano (881m). The path crosses the Laugahraun lava field scattered with glassy obsidian blocks, passes reliefs that are at once smoking hot and covered with snow, then climbs to the top of this dome with a black rocky spur that affords a formidable panoramic view over the multi-coloured slopes, lakes and river here and there. The return path runs along a canyon.
