The Michelin Guide's review
Tucked away in the trough of the fertile Barosa Valley that is presided over by the Serra de Leomil, the former São João de Tarouca Monastery is the earliest Cistercian abbey in Portugal. The church's interior decoration is Baroque, most notably the remarkable stalls. You will see azulejos depicting scenes from the life of John the Baptist and St Bernard, paintings including a remarkable St Pierre attributed to Gaspar Vaz, and a monumental granite tomb (14C) decorated with bas-reliefs.
