Beneath the welcome shade of the palm trees in the Parque Central, locals meet up here at all hours of the day to chat and enjoy the tranquillity of the setting. In the centre of the park, note the statue of José Martí. This sculpture to the glory of the country's "apostle of independence", was created by the Cuban artists Vilalta de Saavedra in 1904.
