The Michelin Guide's review
In the 9C, a Buddhist monk built a rudimentary temple, Daigo-ji, at the summit of the Kamidaigo Mountain, close to a spring with magical properties. The temple continued to grow up until the 13C and went on to enjoy great spiritual influence. The five-storey pagoda, one of the oldest in Japan (10C) houses the first mandalas inspired by Tantric Buddhism. A 45min walk takes you to the upper temple of Kami Daigo, a beautiful example of Momoyama architecture. Round off your visit with a walk about the magnificent tea gardens.
