Ginkaku-ji, or "Silver Pavilion", was commissioned by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1435-1490), whose grandfather built the Golden Pavilion. More modest in size than its ancestor, Ginkaku-ji was never clad in silver. It is cited as an example of "East Mountain" culture, combining aesthetic concepts related to the Zen philosophy with a hint of wabi-sabi (refined simplicity). The garden is magnificent.
