The name evokes a fissure: the deep, volcanic fissure that the waters of the lake partly fill, in the heart of the Reykjanes peninsula. After an earthquake in 2000, the water level dropped significantly. This phenomenon of lakes occasionally draining inspired Arnaldur Indriðason's novel The Draining Lake (2004). You can go around the lake on foot to photograph the beaches and black cliffs and, perhaps, the sea monster that is said to live in its depths...
