The Michelin Guide's review
On a promontory emerging from the sea, Gonias Monastery (17C) stands at the entrance to Rodopou Peninsula (or Cape Spatha). Hidden behind its fortress-like form there is an elegant courtyard planted with a lemon tree, numerous potted plants and a vine running over an arbour, as well as a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with a Baroque door finely engraved on one of its sides. As for the treasure, it houses a rich collection of post-Byzantine icons from the 15C-17C.
