The Michelin Guide's review
Laid out around the famous "Big Hole", the largest hand-dug excavation ever created by man, this open-air village-museum covers 17ha of the historic Kimberley mine site. Mining ceased here in 1914, by which time 2,722kg, or 14 million carats, of diamonds had been extracted. At its height, 30,000 people simultaneously worked this huge excavation, each having a small individual patch to dig.
