Measuring 5km by 2km, Inishmaan Island drops from a high barren rocky plateau at its northeast end down to a sandy shore. It is the most desolate and least visited of the Aran Islands and one of the bedrocks of Gaelic culture. Inishmaan bewitched poet J. M. Synge who would spend time at the sheltered site, called Synge's Chair, on the western cliffs. You can tour the island on Inishmaan Way (8km round trip - allow 2hr).
